Road trip 2010: MO to MT
The Lakota people were the first to call this place "mako sica" or "land bad." Extreme temperatures, lack of water, and the exposed rugged terrain led to this name. French-Canadian fur trappers also called it "les mauvais terres pour traverse," or "bad lands to travel through.
The details of this memory are a bit foggy, but I remember pulling up here very late at night, it was pitch black as far as the eye could see. I believe we had hoped to camp. We got spooked by strange sounds and animal eyes shining in the headlights, a large abandoned semi? Park ranger vehicle? Nonetheless we slept in the car and, what is still so clear in my memory after all these years, is waking up a few hours later, dewy and chilly, and seeing this magical place in which we had slept.
